Maternity Session in the Creek

I told my subject, Katie, that I think there are three times when a woman glows in front of a camera: the day she is a bride, when she is pregnant, and when she is nursing her child. Okay, for that middle status, she may also glisten because, well … growing a human inside of you can be hot work. If a pregnant woman asks, “Is it hot in here or is it me,” the correct and safe answer is, “Yes, you’re right, it is a tad warm.”

So Kate was happy to climb into the creek for her maternity session. The setting was by the Hiwassee River, back towards Reliance, Tennessee. I knew we had to do this sooner than later, as the warmth of summer was fast approaching its end. A weekday morning saw no one around, so we had absolute privacy. Add a $5 dress Katie picked up at a thrift store - no worries with getting it wet - and there you have it!

I photographed Katie’s wedding to Nathan back in 2016. This baby is actually Number Two, who will join his big brother, Benny. Another boy it is, but Katie and Nathan are keeping mum on his name. I do know this - Katie and Nathan absolutely ROCK IT as parents!

By the way, this creek is fairly level but it does have some troughs where the water can get higher than one’s waist. I know - I slipped on an algae-coated surface of a rock and went under. Fortunately, my instincts were triggered and I shot my hand holding the camera high in the air. I submerged - but my camera did not! A quick toweling and we kept shooting!

I admire and appreciate a client who will be up for something different and Katie is one cool mom. I know her family treasures her and with good reason - she’s gold!
