Mensch: Natalie and Travis' Proposal

Do you know the word mensch?

It is a Yiddish word that translates as “man.” But I am from New York and while I am not Jewish, I grew up hearing a lot of Yiddish words and not only understanding their literal meaning but their nuanced meaning as well.

So mensch carries a meaning beyond simply “man.” In fact, it can even be used in reference to a woman! A mensch is a person whom you might say is the “step up” kind, a person who is honorable, good-hearted, gracious, and places the happiness of all first and foremost. A mensch does not need to be a famous person, or even a wealthy person - but it is a humble person, someone who just makes you think the world is a better place because they are in it.

So, let me say this - Natalie is a very lucky woman because she is now engaged to a real mensch.

Travis operates his own company and has that “take charge, make plans” attitude of a business man. He knew that it was important to Natalie to be ready for pictures. So, coming to the Smokies with her and her parents, we had several phone calls and emails going back and forth, including his future father-in-law. Travis wanted Natalie not just to be surprised but to feel cherished.

But wait . . . there’s more. When I was talking to Natalie’s Dad, I had to keep mum about something else Travis had in mind. Because Travis also knew the occasion would be made all the more special if the closest and oldest friends of Natale’s parents - who are also Natalie’s godparents - could be there as well, as a surprise to all.

A mensch, I tell you!

So you can imagine the cries of joy and the laughter accompanying this reunion. This became a proposal that also included a family session and I can say, spending time with these folks was a delight. I am always pleased when I can share “my Smokies” with visitors.

Let me not be remiss in saying that Travis is also a lucky man - Natalie is also a lovely woman who matches him well in temperament. I daresay what we have here are two mesnchen.

Enough Yiddish lessons for today! Let’s see their proposal!

Let’s look at them again!
