A First in Cades Cove: Jen and Ryan's Proposal

When Ryan contacted me about proposing marriage to Jen, he had some caveats – her parents would be there, as well as two dogs.  I suggested Cades Cove, where it would be easy to drive up and accommodate these conditions.

But while I have done a number of proposals in Cades Cove, I wanted something different.  So, I took an afternoon to drive – slowly – around the loop road and stop where I thought a proposal could happen.  I noted view, ease of access, and parking.  After all, these locations are also good for engagement and family sessions.

When I did, I came across one spot where the remnants of a bear jam were dissipating.  A local fellow was there and we chatted.  He mentioned that there was a young bear who liked to frequent that spot and that is who passed by and disappeared into the woods.  Well, if the spot was known by another name, I don’t know about that – I decided to call it “Little Bear Valley.”

And Ryan thought it would be the spot for his proposal, a sweet little valley with a view of the mountain beyond.  Mind you, being close to road, as I waited for my couple to arrive, I got the usual questions shouted at me from passing motorists:  “SEE ANYTHING?!”

I did – a gorgeous setting and, after a while, a view I never get tired of seeing and photographing: a marriage proposal. And yes, from the road came the honks and cheers of cars passing when they realized what they were witnessing.

Traffic was heavy but the location allowed us a shortcut across Hyatt Lane.  There, the couple received what I consider a blessing from the Smokies: the spotting of a bear, an animal sacred to the Cherokee.  Further on, picture taking, including a stop at what I consider to be the loveliest cabin in Cades Cove, the Carter Shields home.  Added to the fun was the presence of Clifton, Ryan and Jen’s puppy, and her parents and sister – thank you, Mama Cathy for thoughtfully bringing fun signs to the proposal!

So, here’s to Ryan and Jen, the first couple to become engaged in my Little Bear Valley!  May their days be filled with happiness!
