A New Page in the Family Album: Why Dad Deserves His Own Pictures

A New Page in the Family Album

Some people call it “divorce photography.”

I think of it as something different — capturing the new dynamic of a family after separation.

When I was a family law attorney, I often told my clients: “A divorce is the death of a marriage, not the death of a family.” The love between a parent and a child is still there — and it deserves to be seen, celebrated, and remembered.

Why Dad Rarely Gets Pictures With the Kids

As a wedding photographer, I learned that most guys don’t exactly leap at the idea of a portrait session. When fall rolls around and Mom is planning family photos — picking outfits, scouting the perfect location — Dad usually just goes along. It’s not always his thing.

But here’s something I noticed in my legal work. When couples split, they usually copy the family photos rather than divide them. And in almost every set, you’d find:

  • The whole family together
  • Mom and the kids
  • The couple
  • Individual shots of the kids

What’s missing?

Dad and the kids — just the two (or three, or more) of them.

A New Space Deserves New Memories

Now Dad has his own place. Maybe it’s a condo, maybe a house, maybe just a few rooms he’s making into a home. The walls might be bare. And what could be more meaningful than walking in and seeing new pictures that reflect this chapter — images of Dad and his kids, together, happy, and being themselves?

These Are Dad’s Style of Photos

And here’s the difference: these aren’t “Mom’s style” pictures. They’re about Dad’s vibe.

  • Game-day jerseys in the living room
  • Star Wars lightsabers in the backyard
  • A Saturday fishing trip
  • Goofing with the new dog
  • Out in the woods, decked out for hunting season

For many fathers, time with the kids feels too short — weekends, holidays, whatever the schedule allows. But those moments can be remembered, celebrated, and displayed in a way that makes him smile every time he sees them.

Sometimes, It’s a Gift

And sometimes, it’s not Dad who books the session at all.

Sometimes it’s Grandma, giving her son something he might not ask for himself — a way to see, every day, that he’s still a central part of his kids’ lives.

Your Family’s Story Continues

Your family’s story didn’t end — it just turned the page. Let’s capture what this chapter looks like.

Ready to Start?

Dad, let’s create images that reflect the life you share with your kids — your style, your moments, your memories.

Grandma, give him something priceless — a way to see himself with his kids in this new chapter.

Let's Do This!
