When I had a chance to sit down with the pictures I took of Hella, and especially the ones of her coming at me like a frieght train, I heard the song Helen Wheels by Paul McCartney in my head. For a Dalmatian, a play on "hell on wheels" fits, doesn't it?
I met Hella down in the Florida Keys and she is a sweetheart. She belongs to the Key West Mermaid (who is as equally beautiful as Hella) and spends her days in golden sun.
I got a laugh when the Mermaid told me that people will stop her, point to Hella, and ask, "What is she a mix of?" Helloo, did you not have a Disney childhood? There's a 101 of them, y'know.
Dalmatians were bred in the 15th century in Croatia - originally hunting dogs, their speed, stamina, and protective qualities made them perfect as coach dogs. Later when cities started fire departments and the wagons were drawn by horses, they became a fixture in fire houses, clearing a path for the fire wagons and leading the horses to the scene. Here is the United States, no appearance by the Budweiser Clydesdales is complete without the Dalmatian perched atop the beer wagon, guarding the cargo.
Enjoy these pictures of Hella and marvel at a beautiful example of a great breed.
