OktoWeimberfest: Weimaraner Puppies with Bavarian Flair

A playful lineup of Weimaraner puppies posed in wooden crates for “OktoWeimberfest,” each with tiny beer steins and Bavarian figurines. Warm lights and banners give the scene a festive Oktoberfest feel.

I love Weimaraners.

When I was a child, that was when the first Weimaraner - Smoky - came into my life.  Since then, I have personally owned five of these dogs.

My current one is Bronx, he of the fancy AKC registered name Richer's Take the Uptown D Train (since any New Yorker knows that subway takes you to the Bronx).  A fun fact is that I grew up in the Bronx, in the neighborhood that was the last stop on the D train.

I purchased Bronx from Dilbeck Weims, located in Tunnel Hill, Georgia.  Recently, Bronx's dad became a father again with a litter of eight puppies.  Now, Weim puppies ar ejust stinkin' adorable, what with their gawky poses and blue eyes (blue eyes that, alas, disappear and become amber with age).  I have always wanted to photograph a litter.  I reached out to Craig Dilbeck, who graciously said, "Come on down!"

But . . . how to set up for eight six-week-old puppies? and have a setup that travels easily down to Georgia?

Answer:  box them in.

I would find a box large enough for Weimaraner puppies and photograph them each individually in a box, then arrange the "boxes" in Photoshop.  I wanted a nice vinatge look to the box.  Fortunately, near my studio in Harriman is a great antique store, Temperance Antique Emporium.  And they had just the ticket - an old GRENADE crate, believe it or not.

But wait - Weimaraners are GERMAN dogs, aren't they?  And it is the time of Oktoberfest.  My husband has a collection of steins from Germany and I have my grandmother's antique Hummels . . . so why not incorporate them?

Plus, everything was evenly divided - four girls, four biys, four silver colored, four blue colored.  Each boy gets a stein, except for one who gets a barley sheath (I did have a 4th stein but I didn't like how it photographed)  Each girl got a Hummel.

So I stacked the boxes and set them into an Oktoberfest background I created separately, also doing the same for each box in order to have individual shots.

And there it is - HAPPY OKTOWEIMBERFEST!

If I may add one thing - if you are an athletic person who needs a running or hiking companion, or you have a young family with kids that will crawl all over a dog, you cannot go wrong with this breed.  Weimaraners have a lot of energy and are fiercely loyal to their owners.  They also seem to have a high tolerance to pain, so a poked eye or pulled ear by a young child doesn't upset them.  Weimaraners are bred to be hunting dogs  so that means they thrive on being active.

And most importantly - they're utter goofballs!
